The special loan exhibition, /Ancient Egyptian Art and Magic, Treasures from the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art, Geneva/, is pursuing its tour of four museums in Japan 2015-2016.
150 exquisite works of art drawn from the archaeological collection of the Fondation are on view for the very first time in Japan. The works span the entire four millennia history of pharaonic Egypt from the Predynastic through to the Ptolemaic periods. The exhibition stresses the central role of magic in furthering our understanding of the nature of ancient Egyptian art. The materials used and their colors symbolically reinforce the function to which these beautiful objects were put. Within this context, the art reflects the ancient Egyptian world view of a cosmos in which human beings, animals and plants are harmoniously integrated.
The exhibition is accompanied by a bi-lingual catalogue, in Japanese and English, written by Dr Robert Steven Bianchi, chief curator and curator of antiquities of the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art.
